    40k Slaughter

I played a 1250pt battle against my brother, Neil, on Sunday... CREAMED him. I got off to a bad start, losing my HQ unit and two Assault Marines to a solid hit from his Looted Basilisk. Things turned around, however, and he conceded defeat at the top of Turn 4... I have to admit, though, part of it was the luck of the dice, or lack thereof, on his part.

In a particular turn he fired with his unit of Shootaz and Big Shootaz, I think it was 20+ shots and he missed... all of them. Not even one roll-to-wound.

In another phase, one of my LSTs detonated one of his Truks, killing everyone inside and taking out another six or so Models from units nearby.

My list was 1250pts spread across 50 Space Marine Models and I had opted to go more Troop heavy than I usually do. Normally I have fewer Marines and I replace them with a unit of Devastators and maybe a Dreadnought. List was as follows:

    Troops:
10 Marines - Meltagun, Sargent with Powerfist and Bolt Pistol - Rhino with Extra Armour
8 Marines - Flamer, Heavy Bolter, Sargent with Powerfist and Bolt Pistol
    6 Marines - Lascannon, Plasmagun
    6 Marines - Missile Launcher
    6 Marines - Missile Launcher

    Fast:
10 Assault Marines - Flamer, Sargent with Lightning Claws and Bolt Pistol
    1 Land Speeder - Tornado
    1 Land Speeder - Tornado

HQ: Chaplain - Reclusiarch with Jump Pack

    House... well Townhouse, really

Our place sold on Friday Feb 16 and just THE DAY BEFORE we found the place we want to buy... so here's the story.

On Thursday morning, our Realtor phoned Tracy and told her a place in Panorama Village had JUST listed and we should take a look at it... RIGHT NOW. So she phoned me at work and told me the above and away she went for a showing... THAT DAY with her Mom.

She phones me back at work and tells me it's great, it has a guest suite, good location, good kitchen and it's listed at $398,800.

"How big is it?", I ask. 2100sqft.

Our Realtor says we should put an offer on it RIGHT AWAY (you'll notice I use a lot of CAPS in this story). So we talk about it and take our Realtors recommendation of $395,000 because we want them to just take it.  We presented the offer that night, and take it they did.

This was all done with me on the phone while I was at work... in other words, I said "Ok Dear, spend $395,000 on a place I HAVEN'T SEEN YET"!

It's a good thing we did, though, because that weekend, the sellers had four people want to write backup offers. You see, 2000ish sqft Townhouses in Panorama Village are listing for $430,000ish right now... the sellers had under-priced themselves. Yay for us!

    Too many Marines!

Okay, here goes a RANT session about PAINTING bloody Warhammer figs...

Last night I finished painting another 6 marines which brings my Total Completed Army to 32 Models. In Progress I still have 18 Models... IN PROGRESS... I'm in the middle of painting EIGHTEEN MODELS! Granted before last night I was in the middle of painting 24 models, but who's counting right? Never mind the guys who only have primer on them and aren't evens started yet, and never mind the guys who are still in the box, unassembled and unprimed!

Thank God I've found quicker ways to do my colours... and I'm no longer spending 6 hours detailing regular troops. That'll be saved for special figs.

    Talking about THD

Back to the Home Theatre thing for just a moment. I was thinking that some people might be saying "What is he on about with this 10% THD?" So I will explain. If you already know about audio gear and Total Harmonic Distortion, you can skip this entry.

THD = Total Harmonic Distortion. An audio measurement specification used to determine the accuracy with which a device can reproduce an input signal at its output. THD describes the cumulative level of the harmonic overtones that the device being tested adds to an input sine wave.

As you turn your stereo or home theatre up, more noise and distortion gets added to the signal. At low power levels it is inaudible. The higher you go the more you can hear. Now this is referring to the audio signal inside the device. The better quality of the device, the louder it goes before you start to hear the distortion... before the signal gets dirty.

It is commonly accepted that a human cannot detect a THD of 2% or less. Turn your Amp up as high as you like and until your THD hits 2% it sounds nice and clean. Anything over 3% and you start to hear fuzz, crackling or rattling and a person starts to think "turn it down you're pushing your Stereo too hard". Good Amplifiers can push more power through the system with less distortion.

Had Sony done their measurements of THD and only turned it up until the signal hit 1% THD and THEN measured the power output I think it likely this would only be a 600W system. However Sony can CRANK the volume on the Amplifier WAY up until 10% THD and even though it sounds like crap and you think you're killing your system, they can say "Look! It's putting out 1000Watts!"

    Just for reference:
    - Yamaha rates power at "less than" 0.04% THD
    - Harmon Kardon rates power at "less than" 0.07% THD
    - The human hear cannot hear "less than 2%"
    - The human ear can hear greater than 2%
    - Sony rates power at 10% THD

Thats right, it's not a typo... the high quality manufacturers use LESS THAN zero point one percent THD versus Sony's ten percent. Again this means the 1000W Sony system is comparable to a Yamaha system that "only does" 500W.

    * * BACKPEDAL * *
Some of Sony's high end gear is measured at THD levels of 0.15% but most of the consumer level stuff is 10%

    Home Theatre System

    ...

So since yesterday I've done some reading (more like me) and it looks like Sony is inflating the wattage on their specs quoting 143W per channel + 285W Sub at 10% THD! So really at <1% THD it is probably only a 600W System... whatever. At $300 it was a good deal.

    Accepted Offer

    Good News!

    Home Theatre System

    How unlike me!

Yesterday I was at CompuSmart on Georgia and apparently they are closing the location and everything is on CHEAP! I don't know how long everything has been on sale, but they had no computers left at all... no Macs, no PCs, well no Desktop PCs anyway. They still have 3 Laptops. Anyway, everything on for Uber Cheap. Also CompuSmart had recently diversified and started carrying home entertainment stuff.

Anyway, enough background story. So what did I do that is so un-Byron? I spontaneously purchased a 5 Disc, 1000 Watt Sony Home Theatre system. Usually retails for about $600 and I got it for $298. Call it $300. Nice score! That is the part unlike me... normally I research everything to death and then find the best deal on the features I need / want.

For those of you who want to check out the system, see < Here >

So we lowered our asking price

So we lowered the asking price on our house this weekend and the change hit the MLS system yesterday morning.  Maybe Monday night I'm not sure...  and BAM!  Two showings are scheduled for the same day.  Or were they?  The first one arrived as expected but the second one canceled.

I don't really trust our Realtor and sometimes I think he is playing us.  I mean he's not a bad guy but he strikes me as very "salesman".  Who's to say that he didn't just tell us there was a second showing when there really wasn't and then just tell us they canceled.  That way it looks like the price reduction he recommended is really generating interest.

    I dunno...  maybe I'm paranoid.

    Warhammer Record

Well, I think I've worked out my Warhammer record... 3-8-0... I think.

By brother (Orks) says we are 2 and 2 but I can only remember the two games where I beat him. Convenient, eh? I'll have to check into that.

    Update this more later.

Looks like my bro was right... that makes my record  3-10-0

    ------------------------------
Current record 3-8-0... maybe 3-10-0 after I talk to my bro
